AOC messaged with their first appearance at the 2021 Met Gala

For her first Met Gala appearance, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had to make a political statement. It was right. And since she was on fashion’s most glitzy night, surrounded by some of the most powerful and famous people in the world, what better way to get her message across about taxing the rich than by writing it down? in red on her dress? The Socialist Democrat MP wore a white dress by Brother Vellies, splashed with the political slogan on the back (the lower curve of the ‘rich’ C beautifully mirrored the tulle hem).

“We can never be too comfortable in our seats at the table once they have been given,” says Aurora James, Founder and Creative Director of Brother Vellies and Founder of 15 Percent Pledge. “We must always continue to push ourselves, to push our colleagues, to advance the culture and to move the country forward. Fashion is changing; America is changing. And when it comes to that theme, I think Alexandria and I are a great embodiment of the language that fashion needs to consider adding to the general lexicon as we work towards a more sustainable, inclusive and empowered future.

The outfit was completed with a pair of red shoes from Brother Vellies, with long laces and bright flowers along the heel. Her bag also read “Tax the Rich” to get the message home. Ocasio-Cortez is far from the only politician to attend the Met Gala — Hillary Clinton came in 2001 — but she is the only one who used her time on the carpet to make a controversial political statement. Of course, who else in Washington would dare?
