Former First Lady Melania Trump refused to meet Republican Representative Steve Scalise in the White House after being shot in 2017 during congressional baseball practice because she had already visited him once in hospital , according to a new book, a first copy of which was obtained by Insider.

Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, who also served as Melania Trump’s chief of staff, wrote that Scalise and her family visited the White House for an unscheduled visit shortly after Scalise was recover from the shooting.

Grisham wrote that the first lady’s staff asked her if she wanted to visit the Scalises, who were gathered in the Blue Room, and she declined.

“His response was, ‘No, I’ve already said hello,’” Grisham wrote. The first lady was referring to the time she and then-President Donald Trump visited Scalise in hospital as he recovered from the shooting. According to Grisham’s book, Melania Trump’s response has become a running joke in the East Wing.

“Every time the first lady said no to something, we were like, ‘Well, she already said hello!'” Grisham wrote.

The former press secretary’s book, “I’ll answer your questions now,” has been making waves in recent weeks and is due out on Tuesday.

Grisham served as Melania Trump’s chief of staff before becoming Trump’s third White House press secretary, after Sean Spicer and Sarah Huckabee Sanders. She held the post from July 2019 to April 2020 and drew strong criticism for not having held a single press briefing during that time.

The former president called Grisham’s book “bad and bogus” and claimed she “didn’t have what it took” to work in her administration.

“Stephanie didn’t have what it took and it was obvious from the start,” Trump said in his statement through a spokesperson. “She got very angry and bitter after her break-up and over time she was rarely invoked or even considered. She had big problems and we thought she should solve those problems on her own. Now like everything. the world, she is paid by a radical left-wing publisher to say bad and false things. “
