New Angus Autumn Extravaganza is ‘something special’

Scheduled to take place at Mid-Tipp mart, Thurles over the weekend of October 8-9, it sees the combination of the Association’s Premier Sale and the National Calf Show.

Topping the event on Saturday (October 8) is the Genetic Excellence Premier Sale. This sale is made up of 55 pre-selected Red and Black Angus lots. These include a catalog of strong pedigrees with many top show winners throughout the summer.

The sale will see a draft consignment of the Liss Aberdeen Angus herd of John and Sean McEnroe. Dating back to 1953, the herd is one of the oldest recorded Angus prefixes in Ireland.

The 95-cow herd is rooted in the guiding principle of producing honest, hard-working cattle that meet the business reality of the typical beef and dairy consumer. This year’s draft is the herd’s first major offering since 2008, when their cut-off sale broke records.

In addition to leading two of the three Association Spring Sales this year, the herd wiped the slate clean at summer shows, accumulating male, female and supreme titles at the National Livestock Show in Tullamore. In total, the McEnroe family will offer nine selected heifers, eight of which are sold in foal.

Finishing the First, seven champion bulls will be offered for sale. These lots include both Club and Reserve Calf Champions, All-Ireland Junior Champion and Tullamore Men’s Champion.

As an added incentive for buyers, buyers of the two most expensive bulls of the day will receive €500 in return thanks to the kind sponsorship of Angus Beef Ireland. Ireland’s Aberdeen Angus Association will also sponsor two €500 vouchers for buyers of the two top-rated heifers.

Irish Aberdeen Angus Association Breed Secretary said: “Having visited all the sales lots for pre-sale photos, I was blown away by the quality on display. The catalog features all of the breed’s most productive family lines, not just here in Ireland but around the world. Many sales entries have already proven themselves on the show stage, while others are sure to spawn the next generation of sales toppers. The October 8 Premier sale is definitely a sale not to be missed as I don’t think we’ll see a sale of this quality again for some time.

The animals will be paraded live on the Irish Aberdeen Angus Association Facebook page from 1.30pm on Saturday October 8th for those who cannot be there in person. All animals purchased by buyers outside of Ireland will be brought home by the breeder until appropriate testing is completed.

The 53 sales lots born on or after January 1, 2021 are automatically entered into the Association’s national calf show the following day (Sunday October 9) which will allow new owner animals to present them.

This calf show benefits from a record endowment of €10,000 thanks to several key sponsors.

A total of 120 of the country’s top Angus cattle will compete for the title of Supreme National AXA Calf Show Champion.

The animals that will arrive at the top of their class will participate in the section championships before the supreme championship. The animal chosen to go all the way will then receive a huge prize of €1,000.

What makes this show special is that the buyer has the option of buying a champion on Saturday, showing it the next day and recouping their investment within 24 hours. If the chosen animal was a best-seller and wins the title of supreme champion, that’s a whopping €1,500 back in your pocket!
