Oscar winner Taika Waititi (Bunny Jojo, Dogs Reservation) signed to direct the first feature film adaptation of the successful graphic novel by Alejandro Jodorowsky and MÅ“bius, The Incal, for Humanoids and Primer Entertainment.

Waititi will also co-write the script for the project, marking Humanoids’ first foray into cinema, with frequent collaborator Jemaine Clement (What we do in the shadows, Theft of concordes) and Peter Warren (Ghost team, The story of us).

The Incal is an epic space opera centered around the seedy PI John Difool, who stumbles upon a mystical artifact known as the Incal, an object of great power coveted by many factions across the galaxy. As Difool discovers the powers and purpose of the Incal, he – along with a motley team of unlikely cohorts – reluctantly embarks on what begins as an unlikely mission to save the universe, and slowly turns into a spiritual journey examining the duality and the meaning of existence.

Humanoids

Filmmaker / writer Jodorowsky and French artist MÅ“bius unveiled the title Humanoids in the late 1970s, seeing it become the best-selling science fiction graphic novel in history. It serves as the basis for “Jodoverse”, which encompasses successful comic book series including The metabarons and Megalex, and may be further explored by the Company via additional films at a later date.

“Alejandro Jodorowsky’s films and graphic novels have influenced me and so many others for so long,” Waititi said. “I was amazed to have the opportunity to bring his iconic characters to life and I am grateful to Alejandro, Fabrice and everyone at HUMANOIDS for trusting me to do so.”

“When Humanoids CEO Fabrice Giger introduced me to Taika Waititi’s work, it became obvious to me that it was him,” Jodorowsky said. “I have full confidence in Taika’s creativity to give THE INCAL a breathtaking shot, intimate and at the same time of cosmic proportions.”

Giger added: “It started as the adventures of an idiot named John Difool and then it turned into something else – we called it THE INCAL – something that transformed everything he ever touched and continues to do so: its creators, the other artists who later became part of John’s journey, its editor HUMANOIDS and myself in the process, countless readers, writers and directors around the world, and soon, I believe, the great Taika Waititi himself and anyone who looks to him for inspiration.

Humanoids production partner Primer, led by David Jourdan, acquired a stake in the publishing house in 2019 and brought in a multi-million dollar development fund to partner on a roster. This fund has helped revive the company’s production efforts, which seeks to draw on a catalog of intellectual property from artists and writers such as John Cassaday, Milo Manara, Mark Waid, and Robert Silverberg, among others. .

Humanoids will announce additional partnerships, concerning The Incaldistribution and release of, at a later date. Waititi and Jodorowsky tease the movie in the video above.

Waititi is represented by CAA and management; Clement by UTA and Yorn, Barnes, Levine; Warren by WME and Management.
